Confondre /confound

英语的“confound”借自法语，而法语的“confondre”又借自拉丁语的“confundere”， 这个字由前缀“com-”加词根“fundere”（倾倒液体）组成，意为“（把液体）倒在一起，混合”（to pour together, mix, mingle）。液体倾倒到一起，就变成一体了。所以，法语的“se confondre”就有了“融为一体, 一致”的意思，常译为英语的“merge,coincide”等。
Exemple:
1.Nos intérêts se confondent.
Our interests coincide /are identical.
我们的利益是一致的。
2.La mer et le ciel se confondent à l’horizon.
The sea and the sky merge on the horizon.
大海和天空在地平线处融为一体。
法语的“confondre”也有“搞混”（confuse）的意思。
Exemple:
1.Le professeur confond encore les jumelles de sa classe.
The teacher still gets the twins in his class mixed up.
老师还是会把班上的双胞胎搞混。
2.Il confound toujours le socialisme et le communisme.
He always confuses /mixes up socialism and communism.
He always gets socialism and communism confused /mixed up.
他分不清社会主义和共产主义。
3.J’ai confondu le sel avec le sucre.
I mistook the salt for the sugar.
我把盐当成糖了。
液体混在一起，就“分不清了”，同样，人的思绪也会被“搅乱”,感到 “困惑”。 尽管英语的"confound"和法语的"confondre"都有这个意思,但英语的“confound”常翻译成法语的“déconcerter”。
Exemple:
The patient’s unusual symptoms confounded the doctor.
Les symptoms inhabituels que présentait le patient déconcertaient le docteur.
病人不寻常的症状使医生感到困惑。
法语的“confondre” 也有类似的意思，但程度更重一些：“使震惊，使谔然”，常译为英语的“astound, baffle”等。
Exemple:
1.J’étais confondu devant une telle naïveté.
I was astounded /staggered /left speechless by such naiveness.
如此天真的想法，真是让我彻底无言了。
2.Son agressivité a confondu tous ses proches.
His aggression baffled his friends and family.

3.L'importance du tsunami a confondu la planète entière.
The size of the tsunami stunned the whole world.
海啸的规模之大，使全世界为之震惊。
经进一步引伸，法语的“confondre”就有了“揭穿，曝光”（démasquer）等意思。被当面揭穿后，“骗子，造谣者”等坏家伙也会感到“震惊，谔然”吧？
Exemple:
1.Il est facile pour le professeur de confondre le menteur.
It's easy for the teacher to foil the liar.
老师很容易就能拆穿他的谎言。
2.Si nous voulons confondre cet escroc, il nous faudra des preuves.
If we want to expose /unmask this crook, we shall need evidence.
如果想揭露这个骗子，就必须有证据。
3.Si je parvenais à confondre ce calomniateur, cela mettrait un terme à ces rumeurs.
If I could manage to expose /silence this slanderer, it would put an end to the rumours.
如果我能让诽谤者曝光，谣言就会终止了。
另外，法语的“se confondre”也可以表示“一个尽的说，不停地说”（multiplier, répéter qch）常译为英语的“babble”。

2.Il se confondit en excuses.
He apologized profusely.
