Paire / Pair

今天的“假朋友”是法语的“paire”和英语的“pair”。法语的“paire”和英语的“pair”都表示 “一双，一对”，用来描述成双成对的事物，如：鞋袜，手套，身体上成对的“部件”（耳朵啦，眼睛啦~~ ^v^），etc.
例如:

Elle tient une paire de ciseaux à la main.

She holds a pair of scissors in her hands.

她手里拿着一把剪刀。 （中文不说“一对剪刀”啦！^v^）

Elle porte une paire de lunettes.

She’s wearing a pair of glasses.

她戴着一付眼镜。

Il ne pouvait même pas avoir une paire de chaussures.

He was not even allowed a pair of shoes.

他连一双鞋都买不起。

注意：这个意义上的“paire”和 “pair”并不总是能互译的，比如：裤子，在英语中，裤子总是复数，可以说“一双裤子”，（因为是有两条裤腿吧^v^）：

I'm wearing a pair of pants（jeans /trousers）. 
 
（英语里不能说：wearing a pant 单数XXX ）

Je porte un pantalon /un jean (单数). 
 
(法语里不能说： porter une paire de pantalons)

我穿着一条裤子。

魁北克除外啦，那里的人受英语影响，所以也说 “une paire de pantalons (jeans)”（复数）。

另外，在固定短语中，“paire”和 “pair”往往不能互译：

Yachts et voitures d’exception vont souvent de paire.

Yachts and exceptional cars go hand in hand.

游艇与豪车总是配对的。（驾游艇的都开豪车）

Jackie Chan et Jet Li font la paire.

Jackie Chan and Jet Li pair /team up well together.

成龙和李连杰（在功夫片里）是绝配。

还要特别注意下面这个法语成语：

Les deux font la paire !

They are two of a kind!

他俩真是难兄难弟！

这个短语一般是贬义，用来形容总爱做错事，闯祸的一对小孩子或大孩子（pour deux enfants qui font des bêtises~~ ^v^）。

法语里还有一个名词“pair”和一个形容词“pair”，也都是“假朋友”啦。

阳性名词“pair”意为“同辈，同僚，同等之人”，译为英语的“equal, peer”。同等身份，平起平坐的人，当然不是一般人，而往往是指“贵族”，或大学，学术团体中的教授，院士等。英国上院的贵族就是“peers”。以前法国的上议院也曾称作“Chambre de pairs”。

例如：

Il a été jugé /élu par ses pairs.

He was judged (elected) by his peers.

他接受同行的评判/他由同行推举（任职)

如果一个人太杰出了，“打遍天下无敌手”，没有了“平辈”，法语中就说他“hors(de) pair":

C’est une cuisinière hors pair.

She’s an excellent cook.

她的厨艺精妙绝伦。

“（Jeune fille） au pair”, 就是与东家“身份平等”的“家庭教师”(nanny)，不是“小保姆”或“佣人”啦。“Au pair” 一般是外国女孩子，主要工作是教东家的孩子们学外语等，有的也附带做家务。这个词早已进入英语，也是一样拼法。

法语的形容词“pair/impair”是数字的“偶数/奇数”的意思，翻译成英语的“even/odd”。例如：

Le jury devra comprendre un nombre impair de membres.

The jury shall comprise an uneven number of experts.


评审团由奇数的专家组成。（3人，5人，7人，9人…… etc.）

最后，再总结一下：

法语的“paire”（名），“ pair”（名），“pair”（形）和英语的“pair”构成了一大家子“假朋友”：“一对”，“平等”，“偶数”，怎么样？够乱的吧？其实，“万变不离其宗”——这几个同源词的共同源头是拉丁词“par”，意为“相等的”（equal）：成双成对的东西都是“相等，对称”的吧？“偶数”也是由“相等”的两个数字组成的吧？
