英法形近词对比：法语achever和英语achieve

Achever 

本期的“假朋友”和上一期有很多相似的地方。

 法语的 achever 和英语的 achieve 也是一对“同源词”。 都来自拉丁语的 ad- "to" + caput "head" , 意为“to come to a head”——到头了，也就是“完成”啦！(Finir, mener à bien, terminer）。法语的 achever 常译为英语的“finish, complete, end”等词语。 

 法语的 achever 的使用范围比较广泛，很多事情的“完成”都可以说“achever”。 

例如： 

Achevez d'abord votre déjeuner. Nous discuterons ensuite. 
Finish your lunch first. We`ll talk afterwards. 
你先吃完饭，我们随后再谈。 

J'achève de ranger ma chambre et j’arrive. 
I'll finish my bedroom and then I’ll come. 
我收拾完卧室后马上就来。 

Déçu par ses contemporains, il décida d'achever ses jours dans un monastère. 
Disappointed by his contemporaries, he decided to end his days in a monastery. 
对世事心灰意冷，他决定在修道院里度过余生。 

 如果主语不是人，“Achever de + infinitif”意思也可以是“Apporter le dernier élément nécessaire pour que se réalise pleinement un état, un fait”: 终于做到某事, 在骆驼背上放最后一根稻草，例如： 

Cette remarque acheva de m'irriter. 
That remark brought my irritation to a head/ really did irritate me. 
这句话终于把我惹火了。 （对方已经说了很多不好听的话了吧？一直忍着呢！） 

Cet argument acheva de me convaincre. 
This argument was all that was needed finally to convince me. 
是这个理由最终说服了我。 （已经有很多别的理由了，但并不足以说服我。） 

 法语“achever”的意思还可以是“结束生命，杀死” (Accabler, tuer)，此时的宾语是人或动物。 

Comme le cheval avait la jambe fracturé, ils ont dû l’achever. 
As the horse had a broken leg, they were forced to destroy it. 
马的腿断了，他们不得不杀死它。 

Les bandits achevèrent le gardien pour éviter d’être reconnus. 
The gangsters finished off the guard to avoid being recognized. 
歹徒们杀死了警卫，因为怕被认出来。 

Cette mauvaise nouvelle va l'achever. Il vaut mieux ne rien lui dire pour le moment. 
The bad news will finish him off/ will be the last straw. We’d better not say anything for the moment. 
这个坏消息会要了他的命的。最好先别告诉他。 

Cette longue marche m’a littéralement achevé. 
That long walk has really finished me. 
走这么长的路，可把我累死了。 （没有真的死呀。^v^） 

 代词式动词 s'achever 意思也一样，都是“结束”（end, coming to an end） 
例如： 

Le filme s'achève sur une scène désopilante. 
The film ends with a hilarious scene. 
电影在疯狂的搞笑中结束。 

Le jour s'achève. 
The day is coming to an end/ is drawing to its close. 
一天就要结束了。 

(Radio, TV) Ainsi s’achèvent nos émissions de la journée. 
That brings to an end our programmes for today. 
（广播电视用语）今天的广播（节目）到此结束。 

 再看英语的“Achieve”。它的意思也是“完成，实现，达到”，但更强调为达到目的所需的技巧、忍耐和努力：to gain with effort，to obtain as a result of exertion（通过努力达到某目标、地位、标准）。翻译成法语时常用“Accomplir, atteindre, acquérir”。 

例如： 

You will never achieve anything if you don’t take life more seriously. 
Tu n’arriveras / ne parviendras jamais à rien si tu ne prends pas les choses plus au sérieux. 
你再不严肃对待生活的话，就必将一事无成。 

After years of struggle, Vincent finally achieved fame (his aim). 
Après des années de lutte, Vincent a finalement acquis la célébrité (attaint son but). 
经过多年奋斗，文森特终于成名了（实现了目标）。 

Will he ever achieve the success he deserves? 
Remportera-t-il jamais le succès qu’il mérite? 
他会取得应有的成功吗？ 

We have really achieved something today. 
On a vraiment bien avancé aujourd’hui. 
我们今天收获不小。 

The question is how we can achieve these objectives. 
La question est de savoir comment atteindre ces objectifs. 
问题是如何实现这些目标。 

Some are born great, some achieve greatness.. (Shakespeare， Twelfth Night) 
Il en est qui naissent grands, d'autres qui conquièrent les grandeurs. 
“有些人生而伟大，有些人通过努力而成就伟业。”（莎翁《第十二夜》） 

 看出区别了吗？法语 “achever”可以用于大事，也可以用于小事。 而英语的“achieve”所完成的则一定是了不起的大事。看看两个词的名词形式“achievement”,“achèvement”就更清楚了。 

例如： 

L’achèvement des travaux est prévu pour fin 2013. 
The completion of the work is planned for the end of 2013. 
工程预计在2013年完工。 

L’autoroute est en voie d’achèvement. 
The motorway is nearing completion. 
高速公路就要竣工了。 

“完工”，是很平常的事吧？ 

 再看英文的“achievement”:都是很了不起的事啦，一般翻译为“业绩”，“成就”等： 

The achievement of the goals he had set himself left him only half-satisfied. 
Il n’était qu’à moitié satisfait d’avoir attaint les objectifs qu’il s’était fixés. 
达成了给自己设定的目标，他只感到有一半满意。 

I’ve always been fascinated by the achievement of great mountaineers like Hillary. 
J’ai toujours été fasciné par les exploits de grands alpinistes tels que Hillary. 
希拉里等伟大的登山家所创造的业绩总是令我神往。 

Finishing the book in less than a year was a tremendous achievement. 
Il a fini le livre en moins d’un an. C’est une belle performance ! 
在不到一年的时间里完成这本书，这真是了不起的成就。 

It was one of the greatest achievement of his career. 
C’est une des plus belles réalisations de sa carrière. 
这是他的职业生涯中最伟大的成就之一。 

 好了，关于“achever”和“achieve”就先说这些吧。童鞋们是否都清楚了呢？

法语“achever”是用于“完成，结束，完成生命，杀死”等意思，可用于大事，也可用于小事。

最后，再总结一下： 

本期的“achieve”以及上期的“accomplish”均是来自法语的“外来语”。但英语里已经有表示“完成”的很多说法了，比如：“finish, end, do”等等。如何分工呢？于是，“完成”的概念就要“细分”了。（还记得“切蛋糕”的比喻吗？ ^v^） 

其实，几乎所有语言都用外来语表示“特别的”，“限定的”领域，或表示一种“高雅”文体。（会说外语也是身份的象征吧？ ^v^） 

有很多例子啦： 

Voyage: 在法语里可以是任何旅行，而在英语里只限于“航海”和“航天”。 

Carte 在法语里可以是任何“图，卡片”，而到了英语里，就只限于餐桌上的“菜单”了。 

而能读懂 Carte 上那些“French-sounding”, 说起来“洋腔洋调”的菜名，就更“牛”了吧？ （Snobbish! ^v^） 

所以，“吃完饭”这样司空见惯的小事就用“finish”, 而“成就伟业”就要说“achievement”啦。 （^v^） 

Snobbism 也是形成 “Faux amis” 的一个原因吧？ 

 至于“achieve”与上期的“accomplish”的区别， 记住下面的话就可以了： 

Task accomplished（完成任务）, goals achieved（实现目标）.
