Douter /Doubt

英语的“doubt”借自法语，而法语的“douter”又来自拉丁文的“dubitare”。这个字是从“dubius”派生出的 [“duo”（two）+ “habeō”（have, hold）]，原意是“在两个事物之间作出选择”（to have to choose between two things）。
法语的“douter”和英语的“doubt”译为中文都可以是“怀疑”，经常可以互译。
Exemple:
1.Je commence à douter de ma décision.
I am starting to doubt my decision.
我开始怀疑我的决定了。
2.Je doute de pouvoir vous aider.
I doubt if I can help you.
我可能帮不了你们。
3.He doubted that her story was true.
Il doutait que son histoire fût vraie.
他怀疑她的话可能不属实。
“Douter” (doubt) 是“怀疑”一件事情的“真实性”，倾向于“否定”，即“不相信”这是真的。但法语的“se douter” 则正好相反：它意为“怀疑” 一件（坏）事是 “真的”， 倾向于“肯定，相信”，常译为英语的“suspect”。比较下面的句子：
1.Je doute qu'elle me trompe.
I doubt she is cheating on me.
我不信她红杏出墙。（倾向于否定）
2.Je me doute qu'elle me trompe.
I suspect she is cheating on me.
我怀疑她对我不忠。（倾向于肯定）
3.Je commence à me douter de quelque chose.
I'm starting to suspect something.
我起了疑心。
4.Ils se doutent de ce qui va se passer，et leurs doutes ne sont pas sans fondement.
They suspected what's going to happen, and there is a basis for this suspicion.
他们感觉就要出事了，而他们的感觉是有根据的。

“Je m'en doute!” 意为“果然不出所料”，可译为英语的“that's what I thought! /I"m not surprized! /S/he would,wouldn't s/he!”等。
Exemple:
1.Il est très content d'avoir réussi son examen. ——Ah ça, je m'en doute!
He's very happy to have passed his exam. ——For sure, I can figure that!
“他考试通过了，高兴极了。” ——“肯定的，不难想象。”
2.Elle voit beaucoup de monde quand tu es absent... ——Je m'en doutais.
She messed with a lot of men when you were away…——I guessed as much.
“你不在时，她和好多男人鬼混……”——“果不出我所料”。

这种“相信”与“不相信”有时可以通过“否定从句”互相转换:
Je doute que nous puissions aller très loin cette année.
I suspect that we will not get very far this year.
我怀疑我们今年能取得多少进展。

另外，法语的“sans doute”并不是“毫无疑问”，而是“有点疑问”。因此，不能翻译成“no doubt”。
Exemple:
Il n'a sans doute pas entendu le téléphone sonner.
He probably hasn't heard the phone ring/Perhaps /It's likely he hasn't heard the phone ring.
他很可能没听到电话铃声。

反过来，“no doubt”或者“without a doubt”也不要翻译成“sans doute”，而要译为“sans aucun /nul doute”：
Without a doubt, this is the best chocolate cake I've ever tasted.
C'est sans aucun doute le meilleur gâteau que j'aie jamais mangé.
毫无疑问, 这是我吃过的最棒的巧克力蛋糕。

注意：在简短的回答中，法语的“sans doute”也可以是“毫无疑问”：
Je pense que c'est le fait qu'il ne portait pas la ceinture qui l'a tué. ——Sans doute!
I think he was killed because he was not wearing a seat belt. ——Surely! / certainly!
我认为他的死是因为没戴安全带。——没错/的确如此！
“疑心”是人的天性吧？但“怀疑”并不总是负面的。拉丁成语说：“Dubitando ad veritatem venimus”，译为英、法、中文分别是：
By way of doubting we arrive at the truth(Cicero).
C'est en doutant qu'on parvient à la vérité.
通过怀疑认识真理（真相）。---西塞罗
