Sain /Sane

法语的“sain”和英语的“sane”来自拉丁词“sanus”，意为“健康，健全的” （healthy, sane）。当然，别忘了法语的“santé”。“健全”，也可以是精神，智力上的，在这个意义上，法语的“sain”常可以译为英语的“sane，sound”。
Exemple:
C’est un homme au jugement sain, qui te donnera certainement de bons conseils.
He’s a man of sane (sound) judgement, who will certainly give you some good /sound advice.
他具有健全的判断力，提供的意见非常靠谱。

但法语的“sain”更常见的意义却是“身体健康”。
Exemple:
1.Bien que porteuse de la maladie, la mère peut mettre au monde des enfants tout à fait sains.
Although herself a carrier of the disease,the mother can bear perfectly healthy children.
一个母亲可以是致病基因携带者，但她可以生下完全健康的宝宝。（血友病？）
注：携带致病基因，自己却不发病的人就叫“porteur sain”（healthy carrier）。

2.Seuls les animaux qui sont parfaitement sains sont acceptés par l’abattoir.
Only completely healthy animals are accepted by the slaughter-house.
屠宰场只接受完全健康的动物。

3.Pour avoir de bonnes dents, il faut aussi avoir des gencives saines.
In order to have good teeth, one must also have healthy /sound gums.
为了保持牙齿健康，必须有健康的牙龈。

法语的“sain”除了“健康”之外，还可以表示“完好，正常”，可译为英语的“sound, good”。
Exemple:
1.Il y a beaucoup de tuiles à remplacer mais la charpente est saine.
Many of the tiles need replacing but the basic structure of the roof is sound.
屋顶上的瓦要换新的了，但大梁是没问题的。

2.La viande que nous vous avons livrée était parfaitement saine.
The meat we supplied was in perfect condition /was perfectly good.
我们提供的肉类完全是优质的。

法语的“sain”还可以表示“对健康有益”(bon pour la santé)，常译为英语的“healthy”。
Exemple:
1.Le climat de la mer du Nord est très sain.
The climate of the North Sea coast is very healthy.
北海的气候非常适宜人类居住。

2.Beaucoup de repos et une nourriture saine vous remettront d’aplomb.
Plenty of rest and healthy /wholesome food will put you on your feet again.
好好休息，吃健康食物，你很快就能恢复健康啦！

3.J’aimerais que mes enfants aient des lectures plus saines.
I would prefer my children to read something more wholesome.
我希望我的孩子们能读点内容更健康的书。

英语的“sane”主要是指“精神健康”（sain d’ésprit），也就是说，精神正常，没有精神病。
Exemple:
What’s he doing in a mental hospital? He’s as sane as I am!
Qu’est-ce qu’il fait dans cet hôpital psychiatrique? Il est tout aussi sain d’esprit que moi!
他怎么进精神病院了？ 他的精神（象我一样）完全正常呀！

 “Sain”与“sane”的区别，还可以通过两个词的反义词去辨别。英语“sane”的反义词是“insane” (fou, dingue, dément），指的是“发疯”的精神状态。
Exemple:
1.It is driving my parents insane /crazy/mad.
Ça rend mes parents complétement dingues/fous!
这事把我父母气坏了。

2.They make a noise loud enough to drive one insane.
Ils font un bruit à réveiller les morts.
他们发出的噪音太大，真受不了啦。

3.Meursault is insane at the time of crime.
Meursault était mentalement dérangé au moment du crime.
Meursault在犯案时精神不正常。

而法语的“sain”的反义词是“malsain” (unhealthy），指的是“不健康，对健康不利”，可以是具体物体，也可以是抽象事物。
Exemple:
1.Le tiers des habitants des villes respirent un air malsain.
One third of China's urban residents breathe unhealthy air.
中国三分之一的城市居民呼吸不健康（污染）的空气。

2.Bien des gens croient que grandir dans un ménage de gais ou de lesbiennes est malsain sur le plan affectif pour les enfants.
Many people believe that growing up in a lesbian or gay household is emotionally unhealthy for children.
很多人认为，在同性恋家庭长大对孩子的（正常）情感发展不利。

总结：
英语的“sane”主要指“精神”的“健全”，而法语的“sain”则重点是“身体”。古罗马诗人尤维纳利斯（Juvenalis）说过：“Mens sana in corpore sano.”（健全的精神寓于健全的身体）。这个拉丁格言译成法,英语就是：

Un esprit sain dans un corps sain.
A sound mind in a sound body. (A healthy mind in a healthy body.)
