Crier /Cry

英语的“cry”，借自法语。法语的“crier”来自拉丁语的“critare”。原意为“叫喊，嚎叫”。英语的“cry”最初也只是这个意思。中世纪，英国有一种小官吏，就叫“towncrier” (宣令官)，他的工作就是“town cry”——宣布敕令，公布重大消息。法语的“crier”现在也还是“叫喊，嚎叫”的意思, 但一般都不翻译成英语的“cry”，而是要译为“shout, yell”等。
Exemple:
1.“Allez-vous en!”，cria-t-il. (souvent: s’écria-t-il)
“Go away”，he shouted /yelled (cried).
“滚出去！”他大喊着。
2.Je ne parviens pas à me concentrer avec tous ces enfants qui crient dans la cour.
I can’t concentrate with all those children shouting /yelling in the playground.
孩子们在院子里吵吵嚷嚷的让我没法专心工作。
3.Il me cria que l’ascenseur était en panne.
He shouted to me that the lift was out of order.
他向我大声喊着说电梯坏了。
4.La lumière s’éteignit. En proie à une terreur panique, je me mis à crier.
The light went out. I was panic-stricken and began to scream.
灯光突然灭了。一阵恐惧袭上心头，我不由得大叫了起来。
5.Je l’entendis crier de douleur (de peur).
I heard him cry out in pain (fear).
我听见他疼（怕）得叫了起来。
6.Lorsqu’ils virent arriver leur gardien,tous les singes se mirent à crier.
When they saw their keeper coming, all the monkeys started to screech /howl.
看见饲养员来了，猴子们都尖叫了起来。
英语的“cry”后来发展出了“哭”的意思，但同时也保留了“叫喊，嚎叫”的原意。

别哭别哭。 我给你买个新的泰迪熊。
2.Don’t be such a crybaby!

其实，大多数语言都象英语一样，用同一个动词表达“哭”和“叫喊”，唯独罗曼语族和斯拉夫语族例外。罗曼语和斯拉夫语都用另一个单独的词表示“哭”，例如：法语的“pleurer”，而且，所有这些词的原始意义都是“捶打（胸口）”——汉语里也说“捶胸顿足”吧？
