Blâmer / blame

 “Blâmer” 和 “blame” 在外貌上有个明显的区别：法语的 “blâmer” 里有个 “小帽子” (accent circonflexe) !                 

  

“小帽子” 往往意味着有个 “隐藏” 的字母 “-S”，例如：bête (beast), côte (coast), forêt (forest), fête (festival), hôpital (hospital)，maître (master), pâte (pastry), etc.

原来，“blâmer”和“blame”这一对同源词的共同“祖先”是拉丁词“blasphemare”（revile, reproach）——辱骂，斥责。再往前追溯，拉丁词的源头是希腊词“blasphemos”，意为 "evil-speaking，blasphemy"（亵渎神灵），后果很严重啦！

法语的“blâmer”和英语的“blame”都可以译为汉语的“责备，怪罪”（reproach, disapprove），在这个意义上可以互译：

Peut-on vraiment le blâmer d’avoir donné sa démission ?
Can one really blame him for resigning ?
他辞职这事能怪他吗？

 

但法语 “blâmer” 的语义要更强烈，更富敌意，常译为英语的“criticize，condemn，reprimand”（批判，谴责，训斥）等：

Les jounalistes ne manqueront pas de le blâmer pour ses idées pacifistes.

The press will certainly criticize him for /take him to task for his pacifist ideas.

媒体肯定要对他的绥靖主义思想口诛笔伐。

Les syndicats des mineurs ont blâmé l’attitude inflexible du patronat.

The miners’ unions condemned the inflexible attitude of the management.

矿工工会谴责了资方的不妥协态度。

Il a été blâmé par le conseil de discipline de son club.

He was reprimanded by /received a reprimand from the disciplinary committee of his club.

他遭到俱乐部的纪律委员会的训斥。

 

而英语的“blame”更常用的意义则是“把责任归于，归因于” （attribution of responsibility for a failure, problem, mistake, etc.)。出了问题，人们往往把责任归于别人, 例如:

 He blamed his brother for the bankruptcy /he blamed the bankruptcy on his brother.

Il a rejeté la responsabilité de lafaillite sur son frère.

他把破产的责任都推到他弟弟身上。

They blamed the early frost for the bad harvest.

Ils ont attribué leur mauvaise récolte aux gelées précoces.

他们将欠收的原因归于早霜冻。

Whenever there is an accident at that crossroads they blame the local authority.
Chaque fois qu’il y a un accident à ce carrefour, ils incriminent /mettent en cause les autorités locales.
十字路口一发生交通事故，他们就指责地方政府。

 

另外，还要注意：英语的 “blame” 在 “责备，责怪” 这一意义上，往往用于疑问句和否定句，或用在一些固定短语中。

（à la forme négative ou interrogative , et dans certaines expressions ）:

He’s left his wife and I don’t blame him.
Il a quitté sa femme et je le comprends.

他离开了他的妻子，但我一点也不怪他。

I’m not to blame.

Ce n’est pas de ma faute.

不是我的错。

You have only yourself to blame.

Tu ne peux t’en prendre qu’à toi-même.

你只该怪你自己。

最后，再总结一下：

英语的 “blame” 仅仅是个 “责任归属”的问题，未必包含对 “责任者” 的谴责。而法语的 “blâmer” 就严厉多了：“批评，谴责，训斥，口诛笔伐”。但其同源词 “blaspheme”（亵渎神灵）的后果就更严重啦——幸好，今天已经没那么多神灵了吧？
