Insister /Insist

今天的假朋友是法语的“insister”和英语的“insist”，两个词都来自拉丁词“insistere”，本意为“站在……之上”（stand upon），引伸为“坚持，执着于”（persist, dwell upon）。法语的“insister”意为“坚持，执意于”（persévérer à demander ou à faire qqch.）。初看起来，好象和英语的“insist”没什么不同，但从例句中就看出区别来啦。
Exemple：
1.Je ne voulais pas que mon fils ait une moto, mais il a tellement insisté que j’ai finalement cédé.
I didn’t want my son to have a motorbike but he was so insistent /kept on about it so much that I finally gave in.
我原不想给我儿子买摩托车的，但他非要买不可，我最终让步了。（区别不大？再看下句）
2.J’ai insisté auprès du général pour qu’il épargne la population.
I pressed /urged the general to spare the civilian population.
我坚持要求将军放过平民百姓。
3.J’ai déjà sonné trois fois mais elle ne répond pas. ——Insiste !
I’ve already rung three times but she doesn’t answer. ——Keep trying /don’t give up.
我拨了三次电话她也没有接。——接着再拨！（别放弃） （看出区别了吧？）
4.Téléphone-moi le soir, et s’il n’y a pas de réponse, insistez !
Phone me in the evening, and if there is no answer, keep trying!
晚上给我打电话。要是没人接，就接着再打。 （区别很明显啦！）
5.Inutile d'insister, je ne changerai pas d'avis.
There's no point in arguing as I won't change my mind.
你争也没用，我不会改主意的。

法语的“insister”还有“强调，加重”（accentuer, souligner）的意思，常译为英语的“emphasis”等。
Exemple：
1.Insiste plus sur la deuxième syllabe (note).
Stress /emphasize /accentuate the second syllable (note) more.
第二个音节（音符）要念（唱，弹，奏）得重些。
2.Je n’insisterai pas sur le dernier chapitre parce qu’il traite surtout de la période post-napoléonienne.
I won’t lay much stress on /put much emphasis on the last chapter as it deals mainly with the post-Napoleonic era.
我没有把重点放在最后一章上，因为那一章讨论的是“后拿破伦时代”。
3.Dans cette école, les professeurs insistent beaucoup sur la discipline.
In this school the teachers lay great emphasis on /attach great importance to discipline.
在这个学校里，老师非常强调纪律。
4.J’insiste sur la politesse.
I attach great importance to politeness.
我非常注重礼貌。
5.N’insistons pas sur les erreurs qu’il a commises.
Let’s not dwell on the mistakes he’s made.
咱们不要揪住他的错误不放。

而英语的“insist”意为“坚决要求，责令”（exiger, revendiquer），注意，这个意思比法语的“insister”要强烈得多，也更理直气壮。

J’exige des excuses.
你必须道歉！
2.The landlord insisted that the tenant pay for the repair.
Le propriétaire a exigé que le locataire paie la réparation.
房东要求租房人支付修理费。(不是恳求，而是责令)
3.My mother’s too old to drive really, but she insisted on doing it.
Ma mère est trop âgée pour conduire, mais elle s’obstine à le faire.
我妈妈年事已高，不适合开车了，但她非要开不可。

4.In spite of the evidence, the accused insisted that he was innocent.
En dépit des témoignages, l’accusé soutenait /maintenait qu’il était innocent.
尽管有证据，被告人依然坚持辩称自己无罪。
5.Julie insists on flying first class even though it is so much more expensive than regular seats.
Juliette tient absolument à voler en première classe même si cela coûte plus cher.
朱莉非要坐头等舱不可，尽管头等舱的票要贵多了。

注意：在以下的句子里，法语和英语虽然都用“insist (er)”，但意思有所不同。
Exemple：
Jean a insisté pour payer le repas.
约翰坚持要付饭钱。（未必真的付了钱）
John insisted on paying for the meal.
约翰坚持要付饭钱。（真的付了钱）

英文的句子要准确地译为法语，可以说：
John insisted on paying for the meal.
Jean a tenu à /Jean a absolument voulu payer le repas.
吃完饭，约翰非要买单不可。

中国人去饭店聚餐后，常会有抢着付帐的戏剧性场面（“我来买单！”“我来！”）
Je tiens à payer!
No, no, I insist!
我来，我来！

然而，一场好戏之后，一般总是老大抢到了帐单（有面子呀！）别人只好给他面子啦：
D'accord, si tu y tiens!
Okay, if you insist!
好吧，既然你这么执着（那我就恭敬不如从命了）。

最后，再总结一下：

“Insister”和“insist”都很“执着”，但英语的“insist”总是意味着，有个“反对者”。而法语的“insister”则未必有这一层意思。（想想“打电话”的例子吧。）另外，法语的“insister”强调的是“执着”的“态度”，而英语的“insist”则更强调“执着”的“结果”。（还是英国人更实在呀）。想想饭店里的戏剧性场面吧。
